Hur kan någon förneka sig nöjet med mitt sällskap! Det är bortom mig. Richard Wrights "The Ethics of Living Jim Crow: An Autobiographical Sketch", förordet till Wrights samling av noveller, Uncle Tom's Children, skulle bli en del av hans förebådade Black Boy Wrights utbildning i Jim Crows "visdom" börjar ironiskt nog med att slå hans mamma ger honom för att ha vågat slåss med vita pojkar, och bär honom in i en för tidig cynisk tonåren; det är en vision av den amerikanska södern sammanhängande med den av New York City i s upplevt av Langston Hughes.

Den kanske framstående essäisten under det amerikanska nittonhundratalet är James Baldwin, och det verkar passande att Baldwin skrev sina mest kraftfulla och inflytelserika facklitteraturverk, Notes of a Native Son, Nobody Knows My Name och The Fire Next Time, ungefär vid mitten av seklet. Baldwin var en naturlig mästare i ett slags facklitteraturberättelse som vi förknippar med den mest engagerande skönlitteraturen, där personlig, familjär erfarenhet kopplas samman med ett större socialt och politiskt sammanhang som förstärker den som myt. Liksom sin mentor Richard Wright var James Baldwin en ironisk poet; hans bitterhet och ilska över sociala orättvisor var så fint destillerad, hans språkbruk så passionerat och flytande, han gjorde av de mest tragiskt förnedrade material en värld av häpnadsväckande skönhet.

Baldwins är en sekulär mystisk vision som för oss förefaller vara amerikansk: Alla min [nyligen avlidne] fars texter och sånger, som jag hade bestämt att var meningslösa, arrangerades framför mig vid hans död som tomma flaskor, i väntan på att hålla meningen med livet. skulle ge dem åt mig. Du Bois "Of the Coming of John" och Langston Hughes "Bop" använder verkligen fiktiva tekniker; vi uteslöt litteraturkritik - även om några av våra bästa författare, som Randall Jarrell, Jacques Barzun och Lionel Trilling, har utmärkt sig i den - och fotnotsladdade akademiska essäer för en begränsad läsekrets, till och med av Hannah Arendt. Så mycket som jag ville inkludera Henry James, som jag har noterat ovan, kunde jag inte motivera att skriva om en lång, krystad nystan av ord som få läsare skulle läsa.

Jag kunde inte heller inkludera en annan stor 1900-talsförfattare, Willa Cather, vars tillgängliga essäer helt enkelt var olämpliga och långa. Av Norman Mailers facklitteratur skulle "The Fight" ha varit mitt val för den här volymen, men den är boklängd och har redan dykt upp i Århundradets bästa amerikanska sportskrivning; andra essäer av Mailer, som "The White Negro", kontroversiella på sin tid, är dåligt daterade idag. Gay Talese, en briljant utövare av vad som har kommit att kallas New Journalism, har inte skrivit några "uppsatser" i sig. William Carlos Williams, Ralph Ellison, John Hersey, Wallace Stegner, Barbara Tuchman, Gore Vidal, mest smärtsamt William Faulkner: dessa viktiga författare hade ingen enskild passande essä. Särskilt Faulkner verkar ha haft liten fallenhet, eller kanske inspiration, för uppsatsformen.

Av samtida essäister finns det så många – så väldigt många! Bortsett från de många memoarer av hög kvalitet som skrivs i dag och publiceras med stor uppskattning, är detta en anmärkningsvärt fruktbar era för den personliga uppsatsen. Triumfen, kan man säga, för det mystiska pronomenet "I. Den ideala uppsatsen är i vilket fall som helst lika tidlös som alla konstverk, som överskrider omständigheterna för dess tillkomst. Den rör sig, som Robert Frost säger om den ideala dikten, från fröjd till visdom, och "rider på sin egen smältning", som is på en varm spis. Generellt riktigt bra, jag känner att jag har lärt mig mycket och det har varit bra träning för min kommande GRE. På minussidan verkar några av uppsatserna handla om svarta människor som kämpar med Jim Crow, vilket kan vara intressant och är viktigt om du vill förstå 1900-talets Amerika, men i dessa fall är de överväldigande korta, tråkiga och slöseri med tid.
